2024 In Review
So here we are, at the beginning of another year and so it’s time to take a look back over the last year and float some of the winning shots to the surface.
I actually thought I did a year in review post every year but it turns out I’ve only posted one on my blog before, and it was three years ago! Although broadly speaking I’ve had more opportunities for photography than in recent years, the weather has really not been kind this time around. I’ve also very heavily concentrated on wildlife photography for the second year in a row, so it’s going to be difficult to float my favourite shot to the top and also a bit of a challenge to find good images in other categories. I feel like I’ve managed to corner myself!
Macro
Autumnal Morning Light
My macro this year has really suffered. I’ve barely taken any macro shots, so the pickings for this category are extremely slim.
Honourable Mentions…
Infrared
Highland Viaduct
I’ve taken more infrared photos this year than I did in 2023, but I still feel like all too often I’ve not recognised the opportunities that have presented themselves until after I’ve missed the shot.
Honourable Mentions…
Wildlife
King Fisher at Goosemoor
This is the category in which I’ve been most prolific this year. The Sigma 150-600mm still dominates my photography routine. I’m addicted to it.
Honourable Mentions…
Landscape
Butt Of Lewis
Historically my favourite genre of photography, yet I end this year with very little to show for it.
Honourable Mentions…
Astronomy
Aurora Borealis
We’ve had an extraordinary year in astrophotography, this year, and there’s still potential for more next year too.
Honourable Mentions…
Abstract
Drinks at the Beach
This is a bit of a sub-genre and I’m not really sure how to place it, or even properly describe it. With my recent purchase of an 85mm lens, I realised that I enjoy seeking out shooting abstracts within scenes, so I’ve begun to look at my images with the category “abstract” in mind.
Honourable Mentions…
Street
Advertising Hoarding
I’m really not a street photographer! I think most photographers would regard street photography as particularly associated with environmental, often candid portraiture. I’m somewhat allergic to photographing people, so my street photography leans away from people and more towards the environment they occupy.
Concluding comments
I’m honestly deeply disappointed by my output in 2024, both in quantity and in quality. Only a few of these images are at the standard that I’ve long set for myself and I’ve done a much better job of delivering a creative portfolio in years past. I committed long ago to showing the good and the bad and I really do feel like this is a very clear example of the bad. I’m committed to turning things around and making better images in 2025.
