Early September at Tophill Low
My neighbour Lucy likes getting tattoos. It’s really not my thing, but that’s quite irrelevant. Her favourite tattoo artist is in Driffield – about a 130 mile round trip for us – and so, for fuel, I am very happy to drive her over there. Driffield is quite close to the coast but so far I haven’t ventured that far. Instead, I usually stick around quite close to Driffield. There are some nature reserves in the area, so that’s where I head.
Today I headed to Tophill Low – a nature reserve on the edge of a Yorkshire Water treatment plant, owned and operated by Yorkshire Water themselves. I’ve visited Tophill Low a few times before, with very limited success where wildlife sighting is concerned. Today, again, was very limited. In fact, less activity than I’ve seen before. I don’t think I’ve mentioned before on this new iteration of my blog, but I’m really not a birder. I’m really just an opportunist photographer who happens to have a long lens which is ideally suited to bird photography, so I really don’t know what to expect when I head out to photograph birds. I just go, and hope for the best. Fortunately my expectations today were quite low, and so the day didn’t disappoint too badly. I shot 153 photos in total today, and came away with a single image of a swan that I’m not entirely disappointed with. It’s a pretty standard image, but it’s fractionally better than nothing.
