Annual outing on Maisie’s birthday
It’s now tradition. Every year, Boxing Day is given over to remembering my beloved dog Maisie. Maisie was born on Boxing Day in 2009 and so, to celebrate her birthday, I retrace some of the steps that she and I took on walks and days out over the years we had together. I could probably pick almost any destination in England, as Maisie and I racked up more than a hundred thousand miles traversing the country together.
This year I visited the Yorkshire Dales and made a bee-line for Deepdale in the Upper Wharfe Valley, which was Maisie’s favourite place to chase a ball in the stream. I spent around an hour here, remembering Maisie and the many hours Sheryl and I spent with her in this location. Another stop I made today was Fewston Reservoir, where Maisie and I sometimes walked with Sheryl around the water’s edge.
I’m still deeply affected by losing Maisie but I tried to make the day a positive one, honouring the life of my beloved best friend. Many happy memories resurfaced and, though of course the occasion is tinged with sadness at her passing, I did steal more than one wry smile as I recalled Maisie’s unique character. Maisie will always occupy the greatest space in my heart.
Happy Birthday Maisie Moo. I love you and I miss you, my beautiful girl.
